What is the best wick material?

High-quality wicks are made from braided, plaited or knitted fibres as it encourages a slow and consistent burn. Twisted wicks are of lower quality as they burn faster due to their loose construction which allows the fuel to quickly reach the flame.

Why is cotton wick better?

Cotton wicks are made with tiny cotton fibers that are twisted together and cured with wax to create a single cotton thread. Our cotton wicks have a higher paper to cotton ratio and curled together so that the fibers will un-curl while lit. This causes an even heat ratio and smooth melt pool.

I've decided to buy a MVP and a RBA and was wondering what the pros and cons of silica vs cotton are.

Dissonance Super Member Verified Member ECF Veteran

Cotton is cheaper and a bit easier to work with, but tricker to master (Gotta get the exact right amount of cotton). It's generally easier to wrap coils, since you can use a drill bit to get perfect coils then pull your cotton through versus having to try to wrap it around the cotton.

silica is very easy to work with off the bat, but wrapping microcoils and wicking with cotton doesn't take long to get good enough at either. You might detect differences in flavor and density etc. Microcoils with cotton are easy to clean. Just pull the cotton out and fire the coil to burn it mostly clean.

While the first vape wicks were built from all sorts of materials like silica, rayon and the like, organic cotton dominates the modern vape wick market. Expressions such as “wicking cotton,” “cotton wick,” or just “cotton” have become common terms in the industry. This is because the ‘cotton” material has become so synonymous in the vaping industry that there is no alternative material worth considering. Besides, there are quite some good reasons why cotton is the undisputable material for making vape wicks:

Why Vape with a Cotton Wick?

A poor-quality wick can destroy your vape experience regardless of how great your device is. A great cotton choice makes a perfect “bridge” between your most preferred vape juice and the vape coil. What an enjoyment that comes when the gap is closed with the right choice of wicking material.

Are Cotton Balls a Good Alternative?

Then, there were constant innovations that later settled on cotton as the best wicking material. This transformed and changed the way vape coils and atomizers were assembled. But if there’s something that we cannot ignore in this industry, is that someone is trying a strange way of doing things, and that must be they are trying to vape using cotton balls.

What to use if you don't have a coil jig?

If you don’t have a coil jig you can always use a drill bit or something similar. Cotton is a very popular for wicking because it absorbs e-liquid very quickly and can hold a huge amount at the same time. However it does have a “cotton” taste when vaping that some people don’t like.

Can you wrap a silica wick with a coil?

Pushing a pin threw the silica makes it easier to wrap with a coil. When you first try wrapping wrap wire around silica wick you may find it a bit tricky but I still think it’s a great way to start. Another huge benefit of silica is that it can’t be over heated, so no need to worry about under dripping.

Ekowool provides for better wicking, flavor, and ease of use when compared to silica vape wick.

Is Ekowool the same as Chinese wick?

What is silica wick?

Silica is an exceptionally durable material that , unlike cotton, doesn’t burn when it’s dry. It also produces an exceptionally pure flavor. Although you won’t find a modern vaping tank that uses silica wicks in its pre-built coils, silica rope remains available today as a wick material for RDA builders.

Why is silica no longer common as a vape wick material?

So, why is silica no longer common as a vape wick material? The major shortcoming of silica is that doesn’t transport e-liquid efficiently enough for serious sub-ohm cloud chasing. You can probably get away with using a silica wick for a coil in the 0.5-ohm resistance range, but silica can’t keep up with a really high-mass and low-resistance coil. You’ll have to wait a fairly significant amount of time for the wick to re-saturate after every puff.

What is the best wick material for vaping?

Once one of the most popular wick materials among coil builders, stainless steel mesh is still in use by some today and is prized for its durability and excellent flavor characteristics. Steel mesh doesn’t just produce a great flavor; it’s probably the longest lasting of all vaping wick materials.

Why do people use ceramic wicks?

Aside from the arguably purer flavor, the main reason why some people choose ceramic over silica wicks is because they’re nervous about the similarity between silica and fiberglass. Although there’s no evidence that using a silica wick leads to the inhalation of silica particles, it wouldn’t be good for the lungs if that did happen.

Is rayon a good wick material?

The primary benefit of rayon as a wick material is that it is extremely efficient. Nothing – not even cotton – can transport e-liquid to the coil more quickly than rayon. The efficiency of rayon means that you can puff more deeply and more frequently without worrying that the coil will dry out.

Is ceramic wick better than silica?

Braided ceramic rope has many of the same strengths and weaknesses as silica when used as a vaping wick. On one hand, some people feel that ceramic has an even purer flavor than silica. The drawback, though, is that ceramic is even less efficient than silica when it comes to transporting e-liquid. You can use a ceramic wick with a sub-ohm coil, but you’ll need to wait between puffs. Like silica, ceramic tolerates extreme heat and can be cleaned by dry burning.
