It'd be best to be unbleached organic cotton. Regular cotton balls are probably bleached and some may have other things in them like Hydrogen Peroxide. When cotton was first being used for vaping some would use regular cotton after boiling it, but I'd suggest staying safe and getting unbleached and organic.

Use to use cvs sterile cotton for years and loved it, no boiling. Yep as others mentioned, just unroll the ball, stretch it out slightly and cut a strip lenght wise

It’s entirely possible and safe but @oldhippydude is right. It will be a nightmare trying to form it into the right shape and get it to hold together to put it in the coil.

For a while I used Coil Master Pro Cotton Balls. How useful the balls are will depend on how well they can be unwrapped and cut to requirement.
